Happy Mother’s Day

May 9th, 2010

Wishing everyone a happy mother’s day. In my editorial this month, May 2010 issue, I wrote an article about how we can learn to be our own mothers. So many people, men and women, have damaged relationships with their mothers. Healing our own internal relationship and learning how to parent ourselves can make a huge difference. Read my article in the newspaper or online to learn how to do this.

Reading articles today

May 7th, 2010

Today is article deadline for the June issue. I am so lucky that I get to read inspirational articles all month long and especially when this deadline rolls around. I also just finished reading the review books and watching a couple of movies that came in. Again, such a wonderful opportunity to be inspired and educated on a regular basis.

What about you? Do you give yourself the chance to read and meditate daily? If so, congratulations - you know what I’m talking about. If not, give it a try and see how it affects your life — for the better!

Writing reviews today

May 5th, 2010

I got two interesting movies in for review for the June issue. One is by Barbara Marx Hubbard and we put the trailer up on our website under the video section. It is very interesting!

The second one is about moonlight therapy and a big parabolic mirror someone has built in Arizona! Pretty unique.

Excuse me while I go rest in some moonlight and watch for my reviews in the June issue!

Learning a new language

April 29th, 2010

I am in the process of learning to speak Spanish. Although I took it as a language in college and I grew up with many Latinos in San Antonio, Texas, it is still a challenge to learn to think in another language. It is great that more parents are raising their children to be bilingual. The more people we can communicate with, the better.

As I am learning Spanish, I also realize that learning any new behavior is similar. The more we immerse ourselves in the new language or behavior, the easier it is to make it part of ourselves. Try applying this in your life when you want to make some sort of change. Instead of putting your toe in the water, just jump in - clothes and all!

Today is a writing day for me…

April 27th, 2010

…and I love it. My work with New Spirit Journal is varied, which is one of the things I most love about it. Some days I have a lot of interaction with people through email, the phone, or at meetings. Other days I focus on the business end of things - bookkeeping, state reports, filing and such. And then there are days like today when I get to write almost all day long.

I just finished listening to Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés’ new audio series called Mother Night (Sounds True). It is fabulous and I wrote my review for the June issue.

Now I am writing the front page story for June - an interview I did with Grandma Aggie, one of the 13 Grandmothers…..learn more when the issue comes out.

Back to writing for me.

Two, four, six, eight…

April 10th, 2010

who do we appreciate? Do you remember that from grade school? Who do you appreciate? What do you appreciate? We have so much to be grateful for - now is the time and today is the day. Say thank you, thank you, thank you. Make your life a no-whine zone!

How’s your weather?

April 9th, 2010

Here in the Pacific Northwest we have had some very strange weather. Sunshine-rain-hail-snow-sunshine. All in the same day.

It makes me think about how sometimes we can be like that: changeable with the wind. Does it serve us? Sometimes, yes. Many times, no.

You don’t have to be influenced by the weather of the people around you. Be on purpose with your life and other people’s emotional turmoil won’t affect you. Yes, you can be compassionate. You just don’t have to join in the drama. You can stay clear and happy no matter what.

Response

February 26th, 2010

Quite a few people responded to my post yesterday. People seem to agree that there is something more going on than what we can usually see, so allowing ourselves and others to simply be who we are is the best route to go.

Remember: that includes yourself. Let go of judging yourself as well as of others and feel the weight fall off your shoulders. Life can be the adventure it is meant to be instead of stressful.

Wayne Dyer’s Cancer

February 25th, 2010

Yesterday I received an email from someone who was trying to figure out why Wayne Dyer now has cancer. Some of what was said felt pretty judgmental to me. Here is what I said to the person:

I guess I see people’s getting cancer and such differently. I think we are all here to learn and grow and we do this through various life experiences. When someone has something such as cancer, I try not to judge the situation because I know I have no idea of what is going on for that person at the emotional or soul level. Sometimes it is about their needing to learn forgiveness or to express their feelings or whatever. At other times, I think something much deeper is going on that the rest of us aren’t privy to.

Years ago I gave a talk at Unity in Seattle. At the question and answer time a young woman stood up. Her head was shaved. She said she had cancer and was undergoing treatment. She said her metaphysical friends were telling her she had to figure out what thought processes were causing the cancer and then she could be healed. She said this made her feel guilty that she had cancer and that she was “bad.” Even Louise Hay’s teachings made her feel bad about herself. And she started crying.

I told her that neither I nor her friends could possibly know why she was having to go through such a terrible experience. But, I said, here’s a thought: what if the reason you are going through cancer is to teach the rest of us compassion? What if you are doing this on the soul level to help the rest of us give up our judgments and just love you?

So, I have no idea about Wayne’s cancer. I have known  him many years, back before he was famous. Not as a close friend, of course, but through my work. I have met him and I have interviewed him several times. He is an incredibly gifted spiritual teacher who is very loving and generous. One time when a man who had placed an ad for an event for Wayne and Deepak Chopra didn’t pay his bill of $1,000 I finally wrote a letter to Wayne, telling him how difficult this was for me as a small business owner. I asked him if he could talk to the guy and get him to pay his bill. Instead, Wayne sent me a check for $1,000 and told me to tell the guy that Wayne had paid the bill for him and that they would settle up later. Wow, I was floored.

I know that when famous spiritual teachers have things like illness happen to them, it is even more difficult for them because everyone watches and judges them and quits supporting them. So, I try to give them all the moral support and love I can, realizing I don’t know what is going on for them. And I only hope that if tragedy ever strikes me in a way like that, people will be generous with me in their judgments!

My 2 cents worth!

Are you busy?

February 23rd, 2010

These days so many of us are busy to the point of losing ourselves. Even when you’re busy, remember to take some time for yourself. Something as simple as getting up and walking around your yard or block can work wonders with freeing up your creative energies. Didn’t someone say something about stopping to smell the roses?
