Wayne Dyer’s Cancer

Yesterday I received an email from someone who was trying to figure out why Wayne Dyer now has cancer. Some of what was said felt pretty judgmental to me. Here is what I said to the person:

I guess I see people’s getting cancer and such differently. I think we are all here to learn and grow and we do this through various life experiences. When someone has something such as cancer, I try not to judge the situation because I know I have no idea of what is going on for that person at the emotional or soul level. Sometimes it is about their needing to learn forgiveness or to express their feelings or whatever. At other times, I think something much deeper is going on that the rest of us aren’t privy to.

Years ago I gave a talk at Unity in Seattle. At the question and answer time a young woman stood up. Her head was shaved. She said she had cancer and was undergoing treatment. She said her metaphysical friends were telling her she had to figure out what thought processes were causing the cancer and then she could be healed. She said this made her feel guilty that she had cancer and that she was “bad.” Even Louise Hay’s teachings made her feel bad about herself. And she started crying.

I told her that neither I nor her friends could possibly know why she was having to go through such a terrible experience. But, I said, here’s a thought: what if the reason you are going through cancer is to teach the rest of us compassion? What if you are doing this on the soul level to help the rest of us give up our judgments and just love you?

So, I have no idea about Wayne’s cancer. I have known  him many years, back before he was famous. Not as a close friend, of course, but through my work. I have met him and I have interviewed him several times. He is an incredibly gifted spiritual teacher who is very loving and generous. One time when a man who had placed an ad for an event for Wayne and Deepak Chopra didn’t pay his bill of $1,000 I finally wrote a letter to Wayne, telling him how difficult this was for me as a small business owner. I asked him if he could talk to the guy and get him to pay his bill. Instead, Wayne sent me a check for $1,000 and told me to tell the guy that Wayne had paid the bill for him and that they would settle up later. Wow, I was floored.

I know that when famous spiritual teachers have things like illness happen to them, it is even more difficult for them because everyone watches and judges them and quits supporting them. So, I try to give them all the moral support and love I can, realizing I don’t know what is going on for them. And I only hope that if tragedy ever strikes me in a way like that, people will be generous with me in their judgments!

My 2 cents worth!
